Whereas others of her caste may only clean, Flora’s extraordinary strength and special skills earn her the right to work with bees of higher castes in the nursery and out foraging for nectar and pollen. Large and deformed, she’s slated to be euthanized, but a priestess bee saves her for her own nefarious purposes. The protagonist is Flora 717, born to the lowly sanitation caste in an orchard hive. The novel has been described as The Handmaid’s Tale meets The Hunger Games, and with its plucky young heroine from the bottom caste of a rigidly hierarchical society defying a fertility-based authoritarian regime, that description rings true. For a book that looks like the worst of popular history, there's a lot of historical background information and surprisingly few descriptions of particularly brutal murders (fewer than in Death by Government). Even comparatively minor events, like the actions of John Rabe, have occasionally been mentioned. The scope of it is enormous, yet the descriptions feel complete. This is an excellent history book and a must-read for anyone seriously interested in democides. I was pleasantly surprised that the humor was snarky, but not in juvenile, and that the research was scholarly in the good sense of the term. ![]() After reading some other reviews, and considering the very sensational cover and title of this book, I was afraid it would be tasteless and of limited scientific value. ![]() ![]() ![]() Disgraced, Starling receives a letter of condolence from Dr. However, Starling’s career begins to unravel following a botched drug raid, during which she fatally shoots a meth dealer who was holding an infant. ![]() Seven years have passed since FBI Agent Clarice Starling solved the Buffalo Bill case. In 2001, Hannibal was adapted into a major motion picture directed by Sir Ridley Scott and starring Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter and Julianne Moore as Clarice Starling. The novel has been called “the exquisite satisfaction of a truly great melodrama” by The Guardian and “relentless – endlessly terrifying” by The Los Angeles Times The Denver Post asserts it will “scare your socks off.” Famed horror scribe Stephen King considers Hannibal one of the two scariest novels ever written, alongside The Exorcist. When Mason Verger, a vengeful victim and sadistic psychopath, targets Lecter, he must thwart Verger’s plot to use FBI Agent Clarice Starling as bait to lure Lecter into his trap.
